Bangkok Day Trip to Maeklong Railway Market and Damnoen Saduak Floating MarketLeila and I were passing through Bangkok. With a free day between appointments, we decided to visit two well-known spots about two hours from the city: the Maeklong Railway Market, where vendors set up their stalls right on the train tracks and quickly move their goods when a train comes, and the Amphawa Floating Market, where sellers offer food and souvenirs from boats along the canal. We left our hotel early, at 7 AM, to catch the train passing through Maeklong. A few locals were shopping, but most people there were tourists hoping to see the train weave through the stalls and buy souvenirs. Shopkeepers called out to tourists to keep them off the tracks, while many visitors waited until the last second to take selfies before stepping aside for the train. After watching the train go by in the other direction, we left, knowing it would pass through twice more that afternoon. The experience was interesting, but it felt more like a tourist show than a real market. If we had gone straight back to Bangkok, the trip would have felt disappointing and not worth the four-hour journey. Instead of heading straight back to Bangkok, we drove to the Damnoen Saduak Floating Market nearby. This lively market is full of vendors in narrow wooden boats selling colorful fruits, vegetables, and cooked food to people on the water. The main canal, built long ago to connect the area to the sea, is packed with boats. Smaller canals branch off, winding through a swampy landscape. Many houses with rust-red walls and faded blue shutters line the canal, their doors opening right onto it. Since there are no roads, villagers use boats for all their travel, whether going to the market or elsewhere. Even though it attracts many tourists now, the market is still an important source of income for locals. We enjoyed watching the vendors steer their boats, call out greetings, and bargain with locals and tourists alike. After a lunch of noodle soup and mango sticky rice, I took more photos, and then we headed back to Bangkok, feeling the trip had been worthwhile after all. We booked a Viator tour to handle all the transportation, and it was definitely worth it.
